Stephen C. Hughes resides at 3 Hill & Hollow Road in Hyde Park with his wife and two children. His daughter is currently a junior at Roosevelt High School and his son, a 2005 graduate of Roosevelt High School, attends the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Mr. Hughes holds a MSEE degree from Stanford and is employed as a software engineer with IBM. He is the Town of Hyde Park webmaster and chairman of the Town of Hyde Park Media Committee. He also participates in National Engineering Week in Hyde Park schools. He is completing his second term as a Hyde Park Board of Education Trustee.
I am especially grateful for the opportunity to serve the students and residents of the Hyde Park Central School District over the past six years.

However, our district still lags behind others in Dutchess County in the technology opportunities we provide our students and they deserve better.
I have been a strong advocate for a community voice in the budget process, the facilities planning process and the District Leadership Team. I would like to move the district from our current point of allowing community input when requested to expecting and receiving community input in all aspects of decision making.
One of the most important responsibilities of members of the HPCSD Board of Education in the next year is to ensure that a community discussion occurs on whether our current school facilities offer our children what they need to be successful and whether we can accept how our school facilities reflect upon us. I look forward to participating in that discussion and hope that I can contribute to making it happen.
The school infrastructure is badly in need of upgrade and repair. Overcrowded classrooms are the norm and not the exception. The new Regents requirements are an additional strain on our administrators and teachers. Budget constraints threaten valuable programs. I believe I have both the temperament and the experience to help meet these challenges and to insure that our children get the best education possible. I would like to see more community involvement in the budget process. I would like to see more partnerships with local colleges and businesses. As a computer professional, I would like to see technology become more integrated into the classroom curriculum. And lastly, I would like to be an advocate for the gifted and talented students in our district.

I am seeking election to the Hyde Park School Board to support the youth in our community. My experience as a 23 year school board member will help to move our district forward to become the best in the county. We need to create an educational environment for all students where they may be able to develop to their fullest capacity. All our children need to be prepared to compete successfully in college and/or in the business world. We must continue to improve student performance in all our schools. Also, in the next couple of years I would like to see us address the need to eliminate the overcrowding in all the schools.
As a parent of two students with very different learning styles, I understand the needs of individual students. As an educator, I am able to see both sides of the table, what it takes to educate a student, as well as deal with administration. As a resident and taxpayer, my goal is to provide a quality education for all students.
