District Highlights

School to Work

In the Middle School, students run a cookie company fully staffed by students who market, bake and sell the products. At the High School level, students market, manage and create signs for area businesses. The students run the business at a profit and participate in all aspects of the program.

Artists in Residence

Throughout the year, participating artists who join our staff for several sessions or weeks to share their knowledge an expertise instruct many of our students.

Special Education Services

The district offers a full range of special education services with an emphasis and focus on inclusion within the regular setting. Specialists are available to assist in the diagnosis and program development on an individual basis for all students.

Athletics

Hyde Park offers a full range of athletic programs for its students. There are 22 girls' and 22 boys' interscholastic teams. Over the past years the girls' crew team has been exceptional and competed at the State and National levels.

Technology

Technology is an important and growing area of instruction in the Hyde Park Schools, and the Board of Education has made a commitment to ensure that it is available for all students. Each elementary school has a benchmark year at grade 4 where students are expected to use wor processing, Microsoft PowerPoint for presentations and digital photography. The goal is carried on and advanced as the students enter the middle and high school years.

The Community

The Hyde Park School District, located in the Mid-Hudson Valley 90 miles north of New York City, includes the entire Town of Hyde Park and parts of the Towns of Clinton, Pleasant Valley, Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck. It is located just north of Poughkeepsie on the east bank of the Hudson River. It contains approximately 65 square miles with an estimated 30,000 people.

The location makes Hyde Park ideal for access to the cultural and recreational opportunities offered in New York City, upstate New York and New England. The state capital at Albany is approximately a one and one-half hour drive to the north.

The District is a suburban community with few business and industrial properties in the tax base. Hyde Park was the home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and is a major New York State tourist destination. There are 12 Hudson River estates within the boundaries of the town, four of which are open to the public. The Roosevelt National Historic Site includes the home and gravesite of our 32nd President, as well as the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Library and Museum. Val-Kill, the home of Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Vanderbilt and Mills estates are also open to the public. There are also several institutions of higher learning: Marist College, Dutchess Community College and the Culinary Institute of America all within the boundaries of the district. Bard and Vassar Colleges are also located nearby.

In Dutchess County, there are several cultural organizations, including a major symphony orchestra, a number of art galleries, museums, amateur dance companies, professional theater companies and a variety of choral groups.

A Descrition of the District

The Hyde Park Central School District is located in the beautiful Mid-Hudson Valley, home of such National Historic Sites as the home of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Val-Kill, home of Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Vanderbilt and Staatsburg Estates. The district includes five K-5 elementary schools, one middle school grades 6, 7, 8 and one senior high school for grades 9-12, serving approximately [an error occurred while processing this directive] students with a variety of innovative and progressive programs. [an error occurred while processing this directive]

The District serves students who come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds and vary in ability from those with special education needs to pupils who are advanced learners.

The District maintains high achievement results on New York State basic skills tests while expanding its programs to promote critical thinking, high order reasoning, problem solving, interdisciplinary learning and the integration of computer technology. At Roosevelt High School, students scored above the national and statewide average in both the math and verbal sections of Scholastic Aptitude Test. Approximately 87% of the graduating classes go on to colleges or training schools. Consistently, our graduates attend some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in our country.

Hyde Park Schools employ 429 full-time professional staff; with 396 full-time and/or part-time support personnel (including clerical, bus drivers, custodians, food service), and a fleet of over 100 busses and other vehicles.

The District has a Board of Education with seven elected trustees. The Superintendent of Schools is the Chief Executive Officer reporting directly to the Board. There are three Assistant Superintendents in the areas of Instruction, Business and Pupil Personnel Services. The seven building principals report directly to the Superintendent. There are two Assistant Principals at each of the secondary school buildings.

Hyde Park is the home of the late Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States.
