Hyde Park Central School District

The Board of Education invites constructive criticism of the district by all parents and patrons of the district. It is also district policy to trust its employees and to support their actions so as to protect them from unwarranted and unnecessary attack. The intent of this policy is to maintain dialogue among residents, the Board of Education and the administration while, at the same time, safeguarding employees from unfair criticism.

The Board believes that complaints and grievances are best handled and resolved as close to their origin as possible and that the staff should be given every opportunity to consider issues and attempt to resolve problems prior to Board involvement. Complaints regarding school personnel should be referred to the appropriate administrative officer. In case the complaining party is not satisfied by the decision of the administrative office, the complaint shall be referred to the Superintendent of Schools who may ask that it be placed in writing with specific detail to allow for a proper investigation and response. If the complaining party is not satisfied with the Superintendent's decision, he/she may make a written complaint to the Board, specifying the complaint and the reason(s) why the same has not been resolved administratively.

Exceptions will be made only when complaints concern Board action or Board operations. In addition, the Board will not act on complaints that have not been explored at the appropriate level.

Individual Board members will refer persons making complaints to the appropriate administrative office. Board members will refrain from expressing any judgment until such complaint is submitted to the entire Board. The Superintendent may refer complaints to other staff members when appropriate.
