Microsoft Word Questions

1 Questions: How can I get rid of that big box when I try to draw a line in Word XP??
Answers: Click on the Tools menu.
Click Options. Click the General Tab.
Deselect the last option: Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting Autoshapes.

2 Questions: Isn’t there an easier way to select one line of text??
Answers: To select one word - double click it.
To select one line - move your mouse pointer to the left of the line until the cursor changes from an I beam to an arrow.
Click once to select the current line of text.
Click twice to select the current paragraph.

3 Questions: I’ve created a document and one or two lines spill over to the next page.
Answers: Click on File.
Click on Print Preview.
Click on the Shrink to Fit button.

4 Questions: I HATE it when I’m trying to select something by dragging and my cursor goes FLYING past where I want to stop and then I try to go back and I go FLYING too far in the other direction.
Answers: Click at the beginning of the section that you want to select.
SCROLL to the end of your proposed selection
Hold the SHIFT key and click with your mouse at the end of what you want to select.

5 Questions: I hit Enter and Word automatically inserts a number bullet. Grrrr…
Answers: Click on the Tools menu. Select AutoCorrect…
Click the Autoformat as You Type tab.
In the Apply as you type section, deselect Automatic bulleted lists and Automatic numbered lists. Click OK.

6 Questions: That stupid little paperclip keeps popping up. Arghhhh!
Answers: Right click on the paperclip and select Hide. Or Trade in that paperclip for a cat -right click and select Choose Assistant

7 Questions: Grandma just emailed me a great poem and I want to print it out, but…

Answers: Alt + drag down the page to select vertically, then copy & paste into a Word document.

8 Questions: Yikes! I’ve been typing with the CAPS LOCK key on!!
Answers: Select your text. Click on Format and Change Case. Select Sentence Case. OR Select your text. Hold the Shift key and hit the F3 key.

9 Questions: I’ve created a table with 10 rows, but find I’m going to need a lot more. Table, Insert, Row is tedious.
Answers: When you’re in the last cell in the last row, simply click TAB to insert a whole new row.

10 Questions: I’m tired of doing the same thing on each page. How can I create a shortcut so I don’t have to repeat repeat repeat?
Answers: Go to tools, macros, record new macro. Name your new macro (e.g. smallborderpage) and then start your process. Click the STOP button when you are finished.
Now, just use your keyboard shortcut code to repeat your process. Ctrl+N,P is new page w/small border. OR Tools, macros, macros, select one.

11 Questions: I can’t find a ¢ symbol on my keyboard.
Answers: You can make a shortcut on your standard toolbar to easily insert the ¢ symbol.
Click on View and Toolbars and Customize.
Choose the Commands tab. Select the Insert menu.
Scroll in the right window to find the symbol button (Greek letter Omega).
Click, drag, and drop this button on the Standard toolbar.
One click on this button will bring up a window with all available characters in a given font. Click twice on the ¢ sign to insert it in your page.

12 Questions: Now I have buttons on my toolbar that I don’t want anymore. How do I get rid of them?
Answers: Click on View and Toolbars and Customize.
Click, hold, and drag the button you want to remove until you see an X attached to the pointer.
Let go of the button and it’s gone!
