The HPE Book Club concept came out of the BLT (Building Leadership Team) made up of teachers, support staff and parents. One of our major goals for the year is to support teacher professional development ideals around English Language Arts (ELA) as well as to support the Strategic Plan for Hyde Park schools of improving our ELA scores and eliminating any gaps in achievement due to disabilities or economic limitations. Thus, the group began to consider ideas that would provide students with more opportunities to read, read, read! Research is clear that the more children read, the better readers they become. We began this project by establishing a target population. We identified first and second graders as those students we would invite first. We did not get an enormous response, so we modified our plan. Ultimately, we felt that the project just needed more time and that we needed to invite any child K-5 to come on Fridays at 7:30 am to the library. At that time, students could read together, with an adult or by themselves. We have two parent volunteers who have graciously donated their time and care to this project. In addition, our own Mrs. Benson has been a constant supportive attendee. As time passes, more children seem to join. We are hoping this trend continues. It is a great opportunity for any student to practice and maintain his or her reading skills in a quiet space.
