Preventing the Flu:
Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs
Fact Sheet

1. Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

2. Stay home when you are sick.
Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. Keep sick children at home. You will help prevent others from catching the illness.

3. Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

4. Wash your hands often.
Washing your hands and the hands of your children often will help protect you from germs.

5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

6. Practice other good health habits.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

REMINDER to Parents / Guardians:

  • Children who arrive at school after 8:40 a.m. are considered late.  These children MUST be signed in at the Main Office by the adult who brings them to school.
  • Written absence notes are REQUIRED when a child has been out.  The dates of the absence and specific reason (ex. strept, stomachache) should be included.

Other Health Information:

PHYSICAL EXAMS
If your child is examined by your physician, the physical exam form should be filled out and returned to the Health Office. Keep in mind that the New York Education Law requires a physical exam for kindergarten, first, third, seventh and tenth grade children, and all new entrants either by your physician or the school physician. Students who do not return the physical exam form in the aforementioned grades will be examined by the school physician.

MEDICATION
Medication of any kind is not allowed in school unless it is in the possession of the School Nurse. If your child requires medication during school hours or for emergency (i.e. bee sting treatment), I will be glad to administer it. A statement from the physician and a written request from you is required. Please, if at all possible, bring the medication to me; do not send it with your child.

INSURANCE
The school district provides a supplemental accident insurance. This insurance takes effect only after your own policy has been utilized. If you have no accident insurance, it takes effect immediately for accidents occurring in school or during school sponsored activities. This insurance may not pay for all incurred medical expenses, nor will it pay for injuries sustained while fighting.

EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBERS
Please keep the school office up to date with correct telephone numbers of the person to call in case of an emergency and telephone numbers at your place of employment.

ABSENCES
Please notify the Health Office if your child will be absent for a few days or has a communicable disease. Please send a note with your child explaining the reason for his/her absence when he/she returns to school. If you have any questions concerning these polices, please call me at school.
