For its size the Town of Hyde Park has many interesting and historic sites. There are two National Historic Sites both under the administration of the National Park Service of the United States Department of the Interior.
One is the home in which the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, was born on January 30, 1882. The house, called Springwood, contains 35 rooms and 9 baths. The room in which Roosevelt was born can be viewed by the public. The furnishings of the home are the same as they were when he lived in it.
It was under FDR's W.P.A. program launched as a means of putting people back to work during the Depression that our school was built. Several buildings in the town of Hyde Park and surrounding area were built as part of the W.P.A. program.
During World War II, the
hamlet of Hyde Park often contained the "White House" for
the nation during those periods when President Roosevelt
came to his home for rest and recreation among his friends
and acquaintances. F.D.R. had a companion who stood by him
at all times. This friend was a little black Scotch terrier
named Falla. As he drove around the village in his
car, especially adapted for his needs, and with Falla by his
side, it was not the President the children greeted, but
Falla. Throughout World War II Hyde Park was host to many
important refugees, visitors, government agents and secret
service men who of necessity had to reside in this area. To

The other National Historic Site is the Vanderbilt
Mansion. This building, completed in
1898, is a good example of how the very wealthy lived during the
"Gilded Age" of the Victorian Era. The grounds which encompass the
mansion present a beautiful vista of the Hudson River and of the
mountains beyond.
The Town of Hyde Park also contains three State Parks under the jurisdiction of the Taconic State Park Commission. One is part of the Ogden Mills Estate. This estate contains 65 rooms, containing many priceless antiques, works of art, rare books and mementos of historical significance. The spacious grounds offer a panoramic view of the Hudson River and holds the distinction of not being transversed by the New York Central Railroad.
Adjoining the Ogden Mills and Ruth Livingston Mills State Memorial Park is a golf course known as the Dinsmore Golf Course. At one time it was the second oldest private golf course in the United States, but now it is open to the public.
The Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park to the southwest of the golf course includes the Norrie Point Boat Basin which is an expansion of what once was a mooring basin for the private yachts of the wealthy who resided along the Hudson and sailed up from New York City to their estates in Staatsburg.
Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Roosevelt, lived in Hyde Park at Val-Kill - just a few miles away from the main residence. The only national historic site dedicated to the memory of a First Lady, Val-Kill began as a favored spot for Roosevelt picnics, and in 1924 F.D.R. deeded the land to Eleanor for a personal retreat. Eleanor Roosevelt was certainly a most politically active and outspoken First Lady, dedicating her life to human rights throughout the world. She is still, to this day, known as the First Lady of the World.
The Culinary Institute of America is a culinary school known throughout the world. The CIA was founded in 1946 as a place where returning veterans could learn job skills in the culinary industry.
