When schools close prior to the opening of the school day, all activities and events for that day and evening are canceled. When schools are closed during the school day, after-school and evening activities are canceled for the balance of that day. Scheduled athletic events are also canceled unless otherwise announced.
To ensure that your child will be properly cared for in the event that schools are dismissed early and no one is at home, please make arrangements at the beginning of the school year so your child will be assured of shelter when arriving home. Please be sure to carefully explain all of these arrangements to your child.
A one-hour or two-hour delay in the start of morning classes may be announced if weather reports indicate that early morning snow or ice will change to rain, or that additional time will enable road crews to clear the roads.
In the event of an Early Release, Netherwood students will be dismissed at 11:40 am.
In the event of an incident occurring during the school day which disrupts normal classroom activity, the incident will be immediately reported to our school's main office. Instructions for either school sheltering or evacuation for these non-weather emergencies have been reviewed by staff in our building and can be found in the Emergency Management Binder in the Principal's office. If you are interested in this information, please call the office and the principal would be more than happy to let you review such procedures.
Your child will bring home an emergency card on the first day of entrance to school for you to fill out and return the next day. Please consider the following in providing us with the important information on that card:
In emergency situations, it is vital that we keep our phone lines open should a situation occur for important communication between our school and Central Administration. Please review this plan periodically with your child, especially during the winter months, so he/she will be comfortable in an early closing situation.
If you have a new address due to 911 re-numbering, please send a note into the office so we can update our files.
Parents should include child's name and teacher on all correspondence, forgotten lunches, lunch money, instruments, jackets, etc. It is the student's responsibility to check at the office for any item when it is time to use it. For example, the child should stop at the office to see if it has been delivered. We do not interrupt the classroom to call students to the office to pick up forgotten items.
To promote a safer arrival and dismissal time, the following changes have occurred.
The following is the district policy on student dismissal:
"It is necessary that students be in attendance throughout the school day in order to benefit fully from the educational program of the district. The Board of Education recognizes, however, that from time to time compelling circumstances will require that a student be late to school or dismissed before the end of the day.
No student may be released from school to anyone other than the parents, guardian or child protective services personnel and law enforcement officers pursuant to law, unless the individual's name seeking release of the student appears on a list provided by the parent or guardian.
Parents are urged to make appointments with physicians, dentists, special tutors, etc. after school hours. If a request is necessary, parents should make note of the date, time and reason for the release. Children cannot be excused without advanced written request by parent/guardian, and must be released in care of parent/guardian, unless otherwise noted.
A student may be released to either parent unless a custodial parent supplies the Superintendent of Schools with a certified copy of a court order or divorce decree to the contrary.
The Superintendent shall develop procedures to enable parents and guardians to amend the list of persons authorized to obtain the release of their children."

Announcements will begin promptly at 9:30 starting with the Pledge of Allegiance. We ask that all students are in their rooms because there will be important information to help students throughout the day. Please encourage your children to listen to the daily announcements, as these important messages are given for the benefit of the students and may contain changes.
Parents, guardians, and other visitors are always welcome at our school, but to ensure the safety of all children, they MUST stop at the main office to sign in and get a badge. We ask all visitors to do the same even if the visit is a short one.
If your child is a bus student, he/she has been assigned to a particular bus for transportation to/from home or a daycare provider. If you child needs to make a bus change, a BUS PASS will be issued from the main office, upon authorization of the principal or his designee. No passes will be given unless a note, written from the parent, accompanies the child's request. Proper behavior is expected while riding the school busses. Students are to remain seated.
If your child, for any reason, cannot participate in any pictures, video tapes, press releases in any local newspaper and/or T.V. stations, please send in a request stating that you do not want this to take place. We will place your letter on file and protect your right to privacy. If we do not have a letter on file, we will assume that permission is granted.
Title II Section 203 (I) (5) Federal Register
In compliance with regulation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Entek Environment & Technical Service Inc. was engaged by Hyde Park Central School District in January 1986 to survey the district buildings for asbestos containing materials and assess requirements for asbestos material control.
Peach Laboratories Inc. was retained in June 1988 for additional assessment.
The result was to comply with EPA regulation governing the mandate for school districts to develop a "Local Education Agency's Management Plan History." These documents are retained in the school files.
Since that time, the district buildings have been inspected semiannually and suspect materials have been monitored. In addition, records and notifications required by the EPA have been prepared and executed.
In March of 1997, 2500 square feet of asbestos floor tile was removed from the cafeteria and replaced with vinyl tile. Also in June of 1997, 1400 square feet of asbestos containing thermal system insulation was removed from the ceiling hallways and replaced with fiber glass. This was done to eliminate a potential hazard in the event of asbestos material becoming damaged.
In accordance with EPA requirements, a three-year inspection was completed in July of 1991 by Failsafe Management Alternatives Inc. Failsafe has updated the Management Plan and this information has been placed in school files for your review.
A second three-year required inspection was completed in January of 1995. A third required inspection was completed in May of 1998. All updated information has been placed in school files for your review.
As in nearly all buildings of similar age, Hyde Park Central School District buildings contain asbestos bearing material. The following, located in school & administration files, provide information concerning asbestos bearing materials found in Netherwood Elementary School:
The presence of asbestos bearing materials in these buildings does not denote an immediate problem. The Hyde Park Central School District has implemented a program to ensure that the material is repaired where damaged, maintained in good health, and the appropriate precautions are followed when the material is disturbed for any reason. This plan, along with selective abatement actions where materials are friable, damaged or have potential for being damaged, will ensure the protection of its building occupants from exposure to asbestos fibers.
If you know of damaged asbestos bearing material or suspect that a damaged material contains asbestos, please notify the Director of Facilities and Operations, Anthony Crandall, and/or Rick Wert, the Principal.
To provide the students with a satisfying school breakfast and lunch, the Food Service Department is staffed by 45 paid employees working from 3-8 hours a day. On an average day, 2,350 student lunches and 325 breakfasts are served.
A monthly menu lists the daily lunch offerings, which include a choice of protein entrees, vegetable, one-half pint of milk, and a variety of assorted breads, and fruit. The breakfast menu, which is available in all schools before school begins, is posted in all school buildings.
Student Price: 1 for $2.50, Weekly Price: $10.00, 20 Day Price: $40.00
Reduced Price: $.25, 20 Day Reduced Price $5.00
Adult Price: $4.25(tax included)
How To Apply for Free and Reduced Price Meals
Free and reduced price lunches and breakfasts are available in all schools. A table listing the eligibility criteria can be found below and will be printed on the back of the September menu. An application will be sent home with each child on the first day of school. Free and reduced price meals can be applied for any time during the course of the school year.
To get free or reduced price meals for your children you may submit a Direct Certification letter received from the Department of Social Services, OR carefully complete the application available in each school office or through the school nurse and return it to the school. All information is considered confidential. If you now receive food stamps or Aid to Dependent Children (ADC)/ Temporary Assistance to Needy Families(TANF) for any children, or participate in the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), the application must include the children's names, the household food stamp, ADC/TANF or FDPIR number, and the signature of an adult household member. All children with the same case number may be listed on the same application. Separate applications are required for children with different case numbers. If you do not list a food stamp/ADC/TANF or FDPIR case number for all the children you are applying for, the application must include the names of everyone in the household, the amount of i
Income each household member got last month and where it comes from, and the signature of an adult household member and that adult's social security number or the word "none" if the adult does not have a social security number. An application that is not complete cannot be approved.
Verification
The school may ask you at any time during the school year to verify your eligibility. You will be notified, in writing, if you have been selected for verification. If you are selected and you do not cooperate, your child/children will not be allowed to continue receiving free or reduced price meals.
Reporting Changes
If you list income information and your child is approved for meal benefits, you must tell the school when your household income increases by $50 or more per month ($600/year) or when your household size decreases. If you list a food stamp case number, ADC/TANF or FDPIR number, you must tell the school when you no longer receive food stamps or ADC/TANF for your child or you no longer participate in the FDPIR. You may then fill out another application giving income information.
Income Exclusions
The value of any child care provided or arranged, or any amount received as payment for such child care or reimbursement for costs incurred for such care under the Child Care and Development (Block Grant) Fund should not be considered as income for this program.
Foster Child
Your foster child may be eligible for meal benefits. If you wish to apply for this child, contact the school nurse for help with the application.
Nondiscrimination
Children who receive free or reduced price meal benefits are treated the same as children who pay for meals. In the operation of child-feeding programs, no child will be discriminated against because of race, gender or sexual orientation, color, national origin, age, or handicap. If you believe you have been discriminated against, write immediately to: Secretary of Agriculture Washington, D.C., 20250
Fair Hearing
If you do not agree with the school's decision on your application or the result of verification, you may wish to discuss it with school officials. You also have the right to a fair hearing. This can be done by calling or writing: Support Services Administrator

Service To Children With Disabilities
Federal regulations require schools and institutions to serve meals at no extra charge to those children whose disability restricts their diet. A student with a disability is defined in 7CFR Part 15b.3 of Federal Regulations, as one who has "... a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities ..." Major life activities are defined to include functions such as caring for one's self, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, and working. You must request the special meals from the school and provide the school with medical certification from a medical doctor. If you believe your child needs substitutions because of a disability, please get in touch with us for further information, as there is specific information that the medical certification must contain.
Confidentiality
The United States Department of Agriculture has approved the release of students' names, addresses and eligibility status to school officials collecting data to be used for the Title I and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) programs. Title I and NAEP are United States Department of Education programs used to determine areas such as the allocation of funds to schools, to evaluate socioeconomic status of the school's attendance area, and to assess educational progress. Schools may not release the names and the eligibility status of students for any purpose other than Title I and NAEP without the consent of the child's parents or guardian.
RE-Application
You may apply for benefits any time during the school year. Also, if you are not eligible now, but during the school year you become unemployed, have a decrease in household income, or an increase in family size, you may request and complete an application at that time. You will be notified when the application is approved or denied

It is important for the students to wear sneakers, not boots, during physical education classes. Please help by reminding your child to put sneakers in their backpacks, especially on physical education days.
A few years ago, we started a program called Project Adventure for all the 3rd through 5th grade students at Netherwood. Project Adventure is a non-competitive low- and high-level challenge rope course and a zip line.
In order for this program to be safe and effective, we discuss with the children a contract that each child will abide by. We would appreciate it if you would take some time to read the following contract information and discuss it with your child.
Each child will:
Our expectations of the children will be that each child will be able to work together with others and that they will respect and encourage others to participate and learn from the lesson.
We would like to invite you to attend you child's physical education class to be able to watch the children during the lesson. Please contact your child's physical education teacher to arrange a convenient time.
It is a challenge to dress your children appropriately for the weather during the changing winter conditions. However, going outside is important for our children. They need the fresh air and a change of pace from their inside learning time.
The NES policy concerning recess is to go outside unless it is raining or bitter cold. Please do not request that your child stay in from recess, unless there is a note from your family doctor. Please help your child enjoy their outside time more by dressing them appropriately for the cold or snowy weather. Hats, boots and mittens are necessary for outside play. Some younger children bring in "snowsuits" and they keep the children warm and dry during outside play.
Any child who is ill during the night, or before school, should stay at home for observation and their own comfort. If your child is running a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or above, he/she should be at home and remain there until temperature is normal (98.6) for 24 hours. This is the most effective way to control the incidence of infections in the school population.
Please continue to check your children's hair weekly for the presence of lice/nits.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call.
Eileen Andros
All students in kindergarten, first, and third grades and new entrants are required to have physicals by the school physician unless completed by their private physician.
All medicine taken during school MUST be brought to the nurse by the parent (in original containers) and accompanied by a note from the parent and doctor. Medication cannot be brought to school by the student on the bus.
Board of Education policies, and the Nurse Practice Act, regulate administration of medication to school children during school hours. Therefore, for your information:
Please call the nurse in your child's school if you have any questions regarding these policies.
Head Lice (Pediculosis) continues to be a problem in the community. Lice are highly communicable and difficult to prevent, but if every parent takes the responsibility to check the entire family's hair weekly, these parasites can be controlled.
While outbreaks of head lice are usually first recognized in school settings, much transmissions occurs outside of school, at scout meetings, church gatherings, roller rinks, camps, etc. Lice cannot jump or fly, and are only transmitted by contact with an infested person, or by using an infested comb or brush. Children should not share hats, clothing or grooming aids with others.
Please remember, lice are not related to unclean people or homes. Frequent bathing and shampooing will not prevent lice nor eliminate them once they are established.
We will continue to do our best to protect the children from infestation, checking brothers and sisters and classmates of known cases. If your child is found to have an infestation of lice, he/she will be sent home and readmitted to school after treatment and removal of all nits.
We need your help and cooperation by checking your child's hair weekly, calling the nurse and understanding that pediculosis capitus is a nationwide problem, not a cause for embarrassment and secrecy.
It is the purpose of Netherwood News, our monthly newsletter to provide our families with the important information needed that will go home in a "neat, formal packet." Too often our children's bags are loaded with much debris and we cannot distinguish between what is important and not. The Netherwood News will be distributed every last day of the month and include important information, calendar dates, etc.
For families with more than one student in Netherwood, it will go home with the youngest student of family.

The NES School Store, now located in the lobby, allows students to purchase supplies if necessary. Starting October it is open from 9:30 to 10:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Thanks for your support! So far, our school has received $151.00 from General Mills because you saved those box tops from General Mills cereals, Betty Crocker fruit snacks, Pop Secret popcorn and Yoplait yogurt !!!
Netherwood has been participating in the General Mills "Box Tops for Education" program. This is a great opportunity for our school to earn some "free" cash. For every box top saved, we receive 10 cents from General Mills.
Please continue to save those box tops. Just drop them off in the Campbell's collection box.
With your help, Netherwood School will continue participating in the General Mills "Box Tops for Education" program. This is a great opportunity for our school to earn some "free" cash. We will receive 10 cents for each box top. Please save the box tops from any General Mills products you buy. There is a collection box placed in the office.
Visitors to Netherwood are always welcome but remember you need to stop at the office to sign in and receive a Visitor's Badge.
Parents: In an effort to reduce the enormous Lost and Found box, please remember to put your child's name on all belongings. If your child loses an item, the Lost and Found box is located in the Main Lobby.
