Scoop Math
Lesson Objective:
- This lesson is used to integrate math facts into the PE curriculum and so that students work on catching skills with a purpose.
Grade Level: K-2
Materials Needed:
- Math Facts Flash Cards--addition and subtraction. I use ones with the answer on the back.
- Scoops--one per child.
- Yarn balls--one per pair or group.
- Pocket wall chart for the Math Facts Flash Cards.
Description:
- Set up the pocket chart on a wall with the flash cards in place prior to the start of class.
- Model the task for the children by selecting one student to be your partner.
- Pick a card from the pocket chart and ask the class to help you with the answer.
- Use the answer to determine how many catches you and your partner must make before choosing another card.
- Throw and catch using the scoops and an underhand motion.
- Require the students to take turns choosing cards.
- Repeat choosing flash cards and catching for the alloted period of time.
- Remind students to move closer if they are not successful.
Assessment:
- Circle the area watching the throws and catches and make suggestions as necessary to create success for the students.
- Students who are catching well may be asked to move further apart, while students who are having trouble may be asked to move closer together.
- At the end of the alloted time, allow willing students to tell the class what the highest number of catches they were able to complete.
