Director of HumanitiesJennifer Criser-Eighmyjennifer.criser-eighmy@hydeparkschools.org Secretary: Josephine Perrino Humanities DepartmentThe coordination of the Humanities departments under one Director facilitates the natural interactions among the disciplines of English, Social Studies, and LOTE (Languages Other Than English). At the elementary level, all students read grade-level historical literature, selected with both Social Studies and literary goals in mind. At the secondary level, interdisciplinary projects between Global Studies, American Studies, and World and American Literature are common, and allow students to study these subjects in depth, as well as great breadth. In addition to celebrating the rich traditions of the Humanities, these three departments seek to prepare students for success in an increasingly global society. In addition to infusing technology throughout the curriculum, ninth grade Social Studies teachers begin the year with a unit on globalization. English teachers have worked to incorporate both new forms of media and media literacy into their curriculum. The LOTE (Languages Other Than English) department is considering both cultural studies courses for existing languages, and the introduction of additional languages relevant to today’s society. |
